These are photographs of a cheyletiella mite and egg found on an alopecic rabbit with very flaky skin. This organism causes a disease called “walking dandruff” because if you watch closely the small white flakes which are actually mites crawl across the animal.
This mite is also zoonotic and so can infest people and contagious to other animals as well. It causes intense itching and flaking of the skin. One interesting thing about this case is that all the mites I saw had 6 legs instead of the typical 8. This could be because all of the mites were nymphs but whatever the cause it fit with the history and presentation and treatment was started.
